What is Coaching?

Put simply, coaching is a process that aims to improve performance and focuses on the ‘here and now’ rather than on the distant past or future. … In coaching, fundamentally, the coach is helping the individual to improve their own performance: in other words, helping you to learn to advance to your goal.

There is some confusion out there about what “coaching” is.

That’s because there is no group that oversees the training and practice of coaching yet. And THAT makes it hard to know who to trust and what you should be getting for your investment.

By Coaching with Dr.Atif we work together to development skills, uncover opportunities,  discuss goal-oriented behavioral strategies, and help tailoring more skills to your specific situation.

Each session is topic-specific so we can work empirically and build on cognitive-behavioral principles and motivational techniques.

What Coaching Isn’t

Coaching is not therapy.

Traditionally psychotherapy is a form of treatment aimed at relieving emotional distress and mental health problems. Provided by any of a variety of trained professionals—psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, or licensed counselors—it involves examining and gaining insight into life choices and difficulties faced by individuals, couples, or families. Therapy sessions refer to structured meetings between a provider and a client that may address several issues at once, have evolving goals, emphasize the develop of the helping relationship, and involve several types of personalized treatment strategies.

While some of the techniques in coaching may be part of psychotherapy, therapy covers a much broader territory and is more involved and complex.

Performance Coaching with Dr.Atif
Normally performance coaching refers to athletic performance though it doesn’t have to be just about sports.

Performance coaching can also be about your own peak performance in any area of your life.  Normally a person will choose a performance coach that has a background in the skill they wish to master.

A tri-athlete will normally hire a tri-athlete performance coach.  A speaker will normally hire a performance coach who is already a really good speaker.

A business coach will normally hire a coach that has run multiple successful businesses.  All Performance Coaches aren’t the same.  Just because you’re good at something doesn’t mean you have the ability to teach someone else how to do it.  Some performance coaches can’t modify their skill set to suit others and what others are good at.
The key driver in my success with performance coaching is my skill to find solutions when the challenge and limitations arise. Not every case is nice and neat and not every case has “only two options.”
My ability  to work within a framework of cans and cannot is where my skills, my patients and clients have the most constructive results.
